Our thought process is injected, interrupted, obstructed, alienated, overridden, redirected and manipulated almost constantly. We can no more to contain our thoughts than hold water in our hands. Discovering the nature of our thought patterns is our true predicament. Now, is always the time to engage in constructive thought. In order to add discipline to your thought patterns you need to become familiar with both your constructive and destructive thoughts; thoughts that propel you vs. thoughts that stalemate you.
Take to a quiet room for fifteen minutes and let your thoughts wander unobstructed within your conscious mind. The time will come when you will direct your thoughts to a more constructive purpose. For now, enjoy acquainting yourself with your thoughts.
At first, make no attempt to correct a thought, change a thought or banish a thought. Your job initially is to become familiar with the world inside of you. Thoughts pop like popcorn as you close your eyes to the physical world around you glimpsing this inner sanctuary. It is this place in your mind that your real work is done. This is the land of the conscious mind. It has always been there at your disposal. Let the thoughts flash across this inner screen providing you with a bulk of imagery. See your thoughts on the blackboard of your mind.
As you direct your attention inward, you will begin to identify patterned and attracted thinking. What are the first thoughts that spring to mind? Let these thoughts trail. See how easily like thoughts follow. If it is a problem that comes to mind, pay attention to the many thoughts associated with that problem. Notice the inner visual pictures associated with each thought. As you engage in this activity, you will certainly notice two revealing aspects (1) the mundane routine thoughts and (2) similar thoughts that follow each thought topic (The Law of Attraction at work). I say mundane and routine because you think about things you have concrete concepts of such as your job, a house that you like or friends. Mental pictures of meteor’s suspended in outer space, thoughts of the nucleus of an atom, or the construction of the hull of a ship are not likely thoughts that entered into your awareness unless your work involves these. Thoughts of such do not occur ordinarily, but they can occur with deliberate directed effort. Thoughts of success or constructive thoughts will also not come without applied effort. Each time an unusual thought is brought into your consciousness it will quickly splinter into what are typical thoughts for you.
Your goal eventually is to learn to scan the conscious mind for thoughts that need to be banished. You must learn the difference between thoughts that leave you harmonious and thoughts that pluck at the strings of worry and despair. As you progress, you will become quite adept at noticing constructive and destructive thoughts as they enter your mind. You will not obsess over your thoughts, but rather recognize a destructive thought and immediately expel it from your mind. Conversely, if you find value in a constructive thought you will hold it firmly planted. We will talk in depth later about planting and holding thoughts. For now, familiarizing yourself with the trickling of your thoughts is your purpose.
Commit to engaging in quiet meditation on a frequent basis. As you mature in awareness of your thoughts, redirection can occur. You will become accustomed to paying attention to the details that would have previously slipped by unnoticed. The process of periodically scanning your thoughts throughout the day will become habitual. You will find that you stop often to assess what your thoughts have been making concerted effort to direct them to specific beneficial thoughts. You cannot skip the practice and expect to become a star player. Remember, your internal power is gained through knowledge and application. You have to be willing to apply what you know in order for what you know to work.
Listen to the humming of your thoughts as you go about you day. Know your thoughts by paying attention to the words you choose. Words are your thoughts expressed. They are great indicators of thought patterns. Words fly off our tongues speaking the content of the mind. If you find yourself relishing your current situation, basking in its harmony, content on the joy it is providing then know your thoughts are harmonious and benefiting you.
However, if you find yourself lodging complaints in a frenzy of frustration then realize that your self-directed compass is pointing directly at production of more complaints and frustrating situations. Be aware of your thoughts through your words. Stop yourself when you engage in negative banter. No good comes of it. You only produce more of the same stuff.
The people you associate with most often including your family members, co-workers and friends are also a reflection of you. You have likely heard the expression, you are the sum of the three people you hang around most. This is no coincidence. You are on the same frequency as those closest to you.
We can usually identify the shortcomings in others that we are often blinded to in ourselves. To some extent many of the shortcomings of your close acquaintances also reside in you. Their experiences may differ but their thought patterns are consistent with yours because like attracts like. You and those closest to you are attracted to one another through similar thought patterns. You think alike; not identical but you have enough similarities to unite you.
If you are unable to identify your own patterned thinking listen for it in the whispered words and body language of your closest allies. Pay attention to their predominant communication. Is it negative? Can they find complaints to lodge regardless of the topic? Do they feel powerful and abundant or at the mercy of their circumstances? Their communication is a window into your own thoughts. Peer into this window often. Learn from these opportunities.
Meditating, hearing your thoughts through your words, and monitoring the communication of those closest to you provides the key to unlocking your predominant thought patterns. As you educate yourself on your current thought patterns, you will begin to see clearly their reflection in the circumstances that prevail in your life. Making this connection is critical to changing your direction.
Changing your course effectively requires that you know your current location. Consider if you were lost at sea without an idea of your coordinates. Would you prefer to oar haphazardly in any direction, perhaps circling around the sea while trying to figure out where land is? Most of us, I imagine, would prefer steering our vessel to the nearest opportune spot. We cannot know the best course without knowing where we are.
You need to know your current location. You need to know your beneficial thoughts and the offenders. You need to know what gives you feelings of joy and harmony and what fills you with lack and despair. Awareness of your current position gives you the first set of coordinate points in your path to abundance.
At this point, we have learned that our purpose is creative. We are here to constructively weave our path towards harmony. We are made of energy and so is everything else. This energy attracts and repels in relationship to the excitement of our thoughts. Our physical world is sculpted according to the excited energy of our thoughts. We consist of a conscious mind capable of thinking thoughts and a Universal mind with infinite ability. The Universal Mind is everything which by definition includes you. You in turn are connected to everything via the Universal Mind. Right now we are learners, learning that we have thoughts. Our application is to become familiar with our thoughts as we move forward to undressing our beliefs.
